International day of women and girls in science 2023

In 2019, RICS reported that only 13% of chartered surveyors and 28% of trainees are women. Greenhatch are proud to be working closely with the local college in educating and inspiring the next generation of surveyors. Showcasing what the industry has to offer and how Greenhatch can assist in their achievements. We, along with organisations and businesses are working hard to increase the percentage of women in surveying.

Teresa Robinson joined Greenhatch Group in July on a 12-month placement. Currently studying BEng Civil Engineering at University of Derby.

Teresa enjoyed the surveying modules studied so far at university and enjoys being outdoors. Choosing surveying for their year in industry as they felt it was a fundamental, first stage in the development of civil engineering projects. Gaining a better understanding of terrain to help aid efficient design and construction.

While at Greenhatch, Teresa is keen to continue learning and practicing skills in surveying and the different applications of geospatial engineering. Teresa plans to gain experience in all divisions, recently moving from Building to Land, and looking at Engineering, Rail and Bathymetric.

When asking Teresa about their time in the industry so far and whether or not this came with challenges being female, Teresa said ‘While working at Greenhatch, I have not found any challenges or opportunities that are different to my male colleagues. I see myself as a surveyor who is female, not a female surveyor’.

Teresa commented on how the engineering & construction industry as a whole need to get more females engaged with the subject from a younger age; praising Greenhatch for the work they continue to do in the local college and university in encouraging the next generation of surveyors but suggested more female representation in these meetings and events.
